Pre Augering for Sheet Piles

What is Pre Augering?

Pre-augering is a key technique used in sheet piling projects where dense or compacted soils make pile installation more challenging. By using an auger to pre-drill along the sheet pile line, the ground is loosened, making it easier to drive piles while reducing resistance, noise, and vibration. This method is particularly useful for projects with hard clays, dense sands, or mixed ground conditions that might otherwise require more intensive (and costly) piling methods.

At Steel Piling Solutions, we can equip our rigs with a high-performance Auger Motor, allowing us to efficiently pre-auger sites without the need for separate drilling rigs. This means faster, more cost-effective installation while reducing excess plant hire costs.

Pre Augering for Sheet Piles

How Pre Augering Works

Pre augering is the process of drilling into the ground along the sheet pile line before installation to loosen dense or compacted soil.

This makes it easier to drive the piles while reducing resistance, vibration, and potential stress on the material. By preparing the ground in advance, pre-augering ensures a smoother, more controlled installation process, particularly in challenging soil conditions.

This process can be carried out using either a dedicated drill rig or a multi-functional piling rig that can switch between an auger motor and a vibro hammer. While traditional drill rigs are effective, they require additional plant hire and site coordination. A more efficient option is to use a piling rig that can be fitted with an auger motor, allowing for both pre-augering and sheet piling in one operation. This reduces costs, speeds up the project, and minimises site disruption.

The Process:

  1. Attachment Setup – A piling rig is fitted with an auger motor instead of a vibro hammer, enabling it to drill into the soil before piling begins. Alternatively, a drill rig can be used in severe tough ground conditions
  2. Ground Preparation – The auger is rotated into the ground, breaking up compacted soil and reducing resistance for easier pile driving.
  3. Controlled Soil Extraction – The auger is counter-rotated out, leaving the loosened soil in place while minimising spoil removal and disturbance to the surrounding ground. Barrier protection and exclusion zones are set up to stop any risk of falling into the holes.
  4. Pile Installation – Once pre-augering is complete, the piling rig can quickly swap back to its vibro hammer attachment, allowing for seamless sheet pile installation.

By choosing a multi-functional piling rig, contractors can reduce costs, improve efficiency, and simplify site operations. If needed, dedicated drill rigs can still be used, but for many projects, an integrated approach delivers better value and faster results

Benefits of Pre-Augering

  • Improved Efficiency – Reduces pile resistance, making installation quicker and easier
  • Lower Costs – Eliminates the need for separate drilling rigs, reducing plant hire expenses
  • Better Pile Quality – Reduces stress on sheet piles, preventing potential damage during installation
  • Minimised Noise & Vibration – A great option for urban or environmentally sensitive sites
  • Identifies Obstructions Early – Helps avoid costly delays by detecting underground obstacles before piling

Is Pre Augering Necessary?

Pre augering is not always necessary, but it can be a game-changer in the right conditions. It is highly recommended if your project involves:

  • Dense, compacted, or stiff soils that make pile installation difficult.
  • Sensitive environments where noise and vibration need to be minimised.
  • Sites with potential underground obstructions that could delay installation. Deep pile installations where ground resistance is expected to increase with depth

If you’re unsure whether pre-augering is required for your project, Steel Piling Solutions can assess your site conditions and recommend the best approach.

FAQS

If your site has hard, dense, or mixed soils, pre drilling can make pile installation more efficient. We can assess your ground conditions and advise on the best approach.

No, pre-augering loosens the soil without removing large amounts. Only a small volume of spoil is displaced by the auger flight itself.

Not necessarily. In many cases, it reduces overall project time by making sheet pile installation smoother and avoiding delays caused by tough ground conditions.

No, it depends on the soil type and project requirements. If your site has loose or soft ground, you may not need it.

Yes. Our rigs can be fitted with Auger Motors, allowing us to carry out pre-augering and sheet piling in one efficient process without the need for additional plant.
