Sheet Piling for Flood Defences

Protecting critical assets and infrastructure from flooding with durable, engineered sheet piling.

At Steel Piling Solutions, we design and install sheet pile flood walls across the UK to provide long-term protection for commercial and public-sector sites. Whether it’s reinforcing riverbanks, securing coastal embankments, or enabling construction in flood-prone zones, our sheet piling expertise delivers practical, high-integrity defences that stand the test of time.

Why Use Sheet Piling for Flood Defences?

Sheet piles form a continuous, interlocking barrier driven into the ground. They’re widely used in flood defence schemes because they offer:

  • Seepage control
Interlocked steel sheet piles act as a cut-off, preventing water seepage beneath embankments or retaining structures. This strengthens flood walls and reduces erosion.

  • Structural durability
Properly installed steel piles can last 50–100 years, with buried sections experiencing minimal corrosion due to low oxygen exposure. SPS can apply marine-grade coatings or design in a corrosion allowance for harsher environments.

  • Fast installation
Compared to cast concrete or blockwork, sheet piles can be installed rapidly—often metres per day—reducing project timelines and disruption.

  • Low footprint
Their slim form makes them ideal for flood defence work in constrained areas like riversides, harbours, and urban sites where space is limited.

  • Cost-efficiency
With minimal excavation, reduced need for dewatering, and often no need for formwork, sheet piles keep construction programmes lean.

  • Versatility
Used in both temporary cofferdams and permanent flood walls, sheet piles can be adapted to suit project needs. They can be removed, reused, or incorporated into long-term works.

Steel Piling Solutions works with engineers, local authorities and private developers to provide the right flood defence configuration based on risk, access and ground conditions.

Our Sheet Piling Approach for Flood Defence Projects

Every flood defence project comes with its own site constraints, risks, and regulatory hurdles. At Steel Piling Solutions, we tailor every design and method of installation to suit the location, purpose and programme. Our full service covers:

Site Assessment and Design

We begin with a detailed review of the site’s ground conditions, flood risk profile, and access. Our engineers design each sheet pile wall in accordance with Environment Agency (EA) standards, ensuring long-term structural performance.

We routinely design for:

  • 50+ year design life

  • Minimum seepage through interlocks

  • Corrosion protection in marine and tidal environments

Installation Methods

We offer multiple methods depending on sensitivity, ground type and programme:

  • Vibratory Piling – fast and efficient for most commercial sites where vibration is acceptable. Ideal for coarse soils and riverside areas with good access.

  • Silent Press-In Piling – zero-vibration method using self-reacting hydraulic jacks (e.g. Giken). Suitable for installing sheet piles beside historic structures, live infrastructure or occupied buildings.

  • Impact Driving – sometimes used to reach final depth or for harder ground strata. Used with care to minimise disturbance.

  • Marine & Overwater Piling – using long-reach excavators or jack-up barges to install sheet piles from the water for coastal or inland waterway projects.

Why Choose Steel Piling Solutions?

Our team has decades of experience delivering commercial piling schemes across the UK for the UK Government, Environment Agency, BAM Nuttal and more.

Our track record includes industrial, infrastructure and local authority works delivered on time and on budget.

Strict compliance with H&S and CDM; minimal impact on surrounding infrastructure.

Permanent Flood Walls vs. Temporary Barriers

Not every site requires a permanent flood wall. Understanding the difference can help you plan your works more effectively:

Permanent Sheet Pile Walls
Used for long-term flood resilience. These form part of the finished structure and are often capped with concrete or integrated into embankments. Ideal for protecting high-value infrastructure, utilities, warehouses or industrial sites.

Temporary Flood Barriers
Used during the construction phase to keep excavations dry or protect a site during nearby works. These could include sheet pile cofferdams, aluminium flood barriers, or inflatable systems.

Why sheet piling fits both roles:
Steel sheet piles are one of the few systems that can be reused across both applications. They can be installed to create a temporary dry working area, then extracted post-construction—or left in place as part of the permanent flood defence.

As one of our previous clients, we work to Environment Agency guidelines and assist with permitting and consents for both permanent and temporary flood schemes.

FAQS

Yes – using press-in methods, we can reinforce or upgrade an existing flood embankment without full reconstruction.

The buried portion corrodes very slowly. We apply protective coatings or use thicker sections above ground to ensure long life, typically 50–100 years.

Interlocked steel piles form a strong seal. Where needed, we use additional sealant or welding to enhance performance for critical applications like cofferdams.

We offer silent piling and low-vibration options to meet urban or sensitive site requirements.
